Open Data Armenia Contest 2026
We are announcing the Open Data Armenia annual competition for the third time. Its goal is to unite technical specialists, researchers, journalists, students, and all interested parties to implement useful projects based on #Opendata related to Armenia and the Diaspora.

Data: Includes not only official digital data but also existing data, images, databases, etc., regarding the history, culture, art, literature, economy, and other sectors of Armenia and the Diaspora.

The competition will interest:

  • Developers,
  • Researchers and data analysts,
  • Digital humanities specialists,
  • Data journalists and other professionals,
  • Students wishing to establish themselves in these fields.

Main goal: To stimulate productive joint/separate work and free exchange of experience between developers and researchers, thereby expanding the use of open data in useful projects within Armenia.

Solemn awarding of winners within the framework of Open Data Day in Armenia*, which is part of the International Open Data Day initiative.
Open Data Day will be held for the third time in Armenia

It is part of International Open Data Days, an initiative organized by the Open Knowledge International Foundation, supported by several intergovernmental and international organizations, including the United Nations and the World Bank. Events are held in various countries worldwide; information about them can be found at https://opendataday.org.

Updates

We are currently preparing a series of workshops and lectures to assist competition participants, as well as to launch preparations for Open Data Day to be held in Yerevan during the first week of March.

You can find the materials we have prepared on our social networks, particularly on our Telegram and Youtube channels.

Rules

  1. Individuals as well as teams of up to 5 members can participate in the competition.
  2. Specialists and students interested in the culture and history of Armenia and the Armenian people can participate, regardless of their place of residence.
  3. Participants can primarily use any sources of open data related to the culture and history of Armenia and the Armenian people.
  4. All materials provided by participants must be published with open-source code and circulated under a free license (Creative Commons, MIT, Apache 2). Useful links: https://opendefinition.org/guide/ and https://opensource.org/licenses/
  5. Publications must be maintained online for at least 1 year.
  6. Participants must submit a brief report including a description of the developed project, methodology, and a list of used data sources.
  7. All materials must be provided in English (descriptions in Armenian, Russian, or other languages are optional).

Previous year's winners

Cultural Application Winner: The ArmAQI project, which fosters a culture of monitoring air pollution levels. Participants are volunteers who installed air quality monitoring devices in homes, offices, and other locations, with the data collected on the ArmAQI.org website.


Visualization Winner: An interactive storytelling project about Tigranes the Great. Using maps and data, it narrates how Armenia became an empire, its subsequent territorial losses, and the overall impact of Tigranes' reign. The project is accessible at tigranes-great.netlify.app.


Visualization Winner: The Birdwatching in Armenia project. Designed for birdwatching enthusiasts, it maps where specific birds can be spotted. The database includes 2,470 mapped locations covering 359 bird species. The project is accessible at birdwatchingarmenia.vercel.app.
